Mauritius Holidays

When Mauritius acquired its independence in 1968, agriculture was the backbone of the economy. Sugar represented 90% of total exports. Since then, Mauritius has embarked on a diversification strategy based on an export processing zone and a tourism industry.

Today, sugar contributes to about 6% of GDP while manufacturing, predominantly textiles, represents about 25%. Tourism is the third pillar of the economy and employs more than 15,000 people. Arrivals are expected to exceed the 600,000 mark in year 2000 mainly generated from France, South Africa, Germany and the UK.

In the 1980’s the Mauritian economy was further diversified with the country moving in financial services. Today, there are over 20 commercial banks, 3 bureaux de change, 2 foreign exchange dealers as well as a Stock Exchange. Mauritius aspires to become a Regional Offshore Centre and an International Financial Services provider. Together with the development of the Freeport to take advantage of the country’s strategic location between Asia, Europe and Africa, these sectors are seen as spearheading future growth. Unemployment is practically non-existent with an average growth rate of 6% and per capita income of US$3500 per annum.

The political system is based on the Westminster model with powers vested in The Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers. However, local folklore has a big influence. Over the years, a succession of electoral alliances and government coalitions have blurred distinctions between the main political parties. Electoral campaigning is quite vivacious and spectacular.
