The authentic island
An island of authentic beauty, situated 600 km to the north-east of Mauritius, Rodrigues emerges in the center of an emerald blue lagoon which can be seen from anywhere on the island.
Rodrigues was discovered by Diego Rodrigues in 1528. It bears the surname of “Authentic Island” in many ways, in the physical beauty of the island, caves, creeks & gorgeous beaches, and in its traditional and physical folklore and in the warmth of its people.
No visitor can resist the natural charm of Rodrigues, its tranquility and humanity, the raw spell of its nature and engaging lifestyle. The contrasted topography of the island balances permanently between eye-catching scenery from the hilltops and the image of fishermen’s sailing boats moving swiftly on the turquoise lagoon. Contrast persist also between the busy small roads of Port Mathurin, the main town harbour, and the peaceful ambiance of small villages along the coast.
Living close to the nature
Rodrigues’ economy is mainly based on fishing, agriculture, handicraft and tourism. Every house in Rodrigues is like a small farm. A typical Rodriguan is usually a fisherman or a farmer, and a few are public officers or private entrepreneurs. The small population of approximately 36,000 is mainly Catholic and has its origins from Europe, Africa, Madagascar and China. Rodrigues’lifestyle is very close to the nature. Small houses scattered over the many hilltops has led the Rodriguans to take long walks across maize fields or grass plains where cattle graze. The visitors will often come across children or women clad in straw hats and never failing to greet you on the way, for Rodrigues is still anchored in the values of human respect and spontaneous hospitality in its day-to-day life.
This is also reflected in the cultural traditions and music, a unique blend of Europe, Africa, and Madagascar influence, using accordions, drums and triangles. Many dancing groups perform on the island. The cuisine is another example of authenticity. Based on products from the lagoon, and vegetables and ingredients grown on the island, it offers an irresistible range of savours: octopus salad, delicious fresh fish, creamed maize, pickles vegetables and fruits and green chili paste where one will often find a pinch of the island’s well-known green lime.
